Sheltering in a friary on the road to Canterbury, Chaucer’s pilgrims hear the Franklin recount a mystery rooted in the aftermath of the Battle of Poitiers. In 1356 the dying knight Gilbert Savage tells his squire, Richard Greenele, that the story he has been given about his parents and their deaths during the plague is false.

Richard travels to Colchester in search of lawyer Hugo Coticol and a sealed document that may explain his father’s disgrace. The confession he uncovers opens a trail of family secrets, disputed identity and murder. His attempt to restore his father’s name becomes a dangerous investigation into crimes protected by status and by the confusion of war.
