As Chaucer’s pilgrims shelter in the ruins of a church on their road to Canterbury, the Poor Priest tells a story set in the troubled parish of Scawsby. Philip Trumpington, the new parish priest, discovers that the church and surrounding marshes are haunted by memories of a massacre in which Templars were killed by men led by a former vicar, Romenal.

The villagers believe the consequences of that crime have survived in the form of a curse and mysterious figures known as the Watchers. Philip must separate fear, legend and deliberate human action while uncovering what happened years earlier. The solution requires more than identifying a killer: the old violence has created obligations that the living have tried to ignore, and reparation carries a dangerous price.
