London, March 1382. Two clerks belonging to John of Gaunt's secret intelligence organisation die in circumstances that suggest carefully planned assassination. Brother Athelstan is summoned to investigate how a killer could pass through locked doors without leaving an obvious route of escape.
The deaths become more dangerous when English spies operating in France also begin to disappear, raising the possibility that someone inside the government's own network is betraying them. Athelstan must connect the apparently impossible murders in London with the larger question of treason before the hunt for the traitor reaches him and the people assisting his inquiry.
