Gregory Hartley grows up in Cairo believing that his father disappeared with the doomed Hicks Pasha expedition. His mother ensures that he learns Arabic and other local languages, skills that later allow him to serve as an interpreter when Kitchener’s forces advance south to reconquer the Sudan.
Gregory takes part in the campaign leading to Atbara and Omdurman while continuing to investigate what happened to his father. Military service and the family mystery therefore advance together: the same movement up the Nile that brings him into battle also opens routes into the territory where the older Gregory vanished years before.
