At a gentlemen’s club in British India, John Durham and his companions exchange stories about the enigmatic Father Gregory, a Roman Catholic priest whose influence extends far beyond his apparently modest position. Durham’s personal history and the priest’s concealed connection to it gradually turn a colonial club narrative into an inquiry about loyalty, sacrifice and the difference between public reputation and private character.

The novel moves between Anglo-Indian society and the moral authority exercised by a man who does not fit its usual hierarchies. Rather than presenting India only as an arena for adventure, Wren uses the setting to expose gossip, class prejudice and the ease with which a community misreads those who refuse to defend themselves. Father Gregory becomes a study of spiritual courage and deliberately hidden virtue.
