Otis Vanbrugh travels to North Africa in search of the truth about his friends and becomes entangled with John Geste and the surviving consequences of Fort Zinderneuf. Captivity, forced marches and desert warfare place familiar figures under new pressures, while romantic and family loyalties determine who will risk escape, exposure or death for another person.

The third Geste novel revisits the original mystery from different viewpoints and turns the ideal of self-sacrifice into a question rather than an unquestioned virtue. Wren again celebrates comradeship, but he also shows how secrecy creates needless suffering. The book closes the main trilogy by reconnecting the Legion adventure with the English household from which it began.
