The title invokes the fragile ‘bubble reputation’ pursued at great cost in Shakespeare’s account of the soldier. Wren turns that idea into a social mystery: honour matters, but public honour can be manufactured, stolen or destroyed. The novel balances romantic adventure with a sceptical view of the institutions that decide who appears credible.
