Sinclair Noel Brodie Dysart—Sinbad from his initials—is intended for the Royal Navy until family catastrophe redirects him into the merchant service. Aboard the windjammer Valkyrie he encounters a violent captain, shipboard rivalries, murder, mutiny and storms, while boxing and hard labour test a young man whose education has not prepared him for the brutal hierarchies of the sea.

The first Sinbad novel is both a maritime adventure and an account of identity formed under pressure. Wren contrasts the romance of sail with confinement, arbitrary command and the vulnerability of a crew far from law. Sinbad’s passion and impulsiveness repeatedly endanger him, yet they also prevent him from accepting injustice as merely part of discipline.
