Sinbad Dysart undertakes intelligence work at a remote fortified post on the frontier between French-ruled Tonkin and China. The jungle, uncertain communications and competing colonial interests make information as important as weapons, while local alliances cannot be understood through European military assumptions alone.

The third Sinbad novel is an espionage and survival story built around isolation. Wren places a self-reliant protagonist inside a system that depends upon reports, disguises and questionable intermediaries, forcing him to judge character without reliable institutional support. The setting broadens the series from ships and cavalry to the contested borderlands of Southeast Asia.
