The second Sinbad novel treats the making of a soldier as more than learning weapons and drill. Sinbad must decide when obedience is honourable, when it becomes cowardice and what loyalty requires when institutions protect the wrong people. The book carries Wren’s familiar interest in concealed identity into the British military world rather than the French Foreign Legion.
