In the fictional city of Chandrapore, the Indian physician Dr Aziz meets Cyril Fielding, the English principal of a government college, and the two attempt a friendship across the racial divisions of the British Raj. Their connection also involves Mrs Moore and Adela Quested, newly arrived from England and uncertain about the colonial society they are expected to join.
An excursion to the Marabar Caves ends when Adela accuses Aziz of assault, turning a private and ambiguous experience into a public trial shaped by imperial power. The crisis exposes prejudice among both British officials and Indian nationalists and asks whether personal intimacy can survive a political system built on unequal authority.
