In the 1870s, Dr McNab reluctantly leaves the Indian plains for the summer capital of Simla with his wife and young niece Emily. The hill station promises cool air and social relief, but its villas, church circles and official households reproduce the same ambitions, exclusions and anxieties that govern the colonial administration below.
Emily encounters the possibility of romance, the enigmatic Mrs Forester attracts scandal, and the Bishop of Simla faces pressures within his family and congregation. Published posthumously with Farrell’s Indian diary, the unfinished novel develops another satirical portrait of British imperial society without reaching the conclusion its author intended.
