Michael G. Thomas

Michael G. Thomas is a British author of historical military fiction, science fiction, fantasy and horror based in Monmouthshire. He has academic qualifications in computing, Classical Studies and machine learning, with particular research interests in Greek and Byzantine military history. Thomas is also an experienced practitioner of historical European martial arts and co-founded the Academy of Historical Fencing with his brother, Nick S. Thomas. His practical study of longsword, sidesword, sabre and other historical weapons informs the combat and military detail in his fiction.

Thomas’s historical adventures range from the sixteenth century to the Vietnam War. The Gustav’s Greatswords books follow Landsknecht-style mercenaries through warfare in sixteenth-century Germany, while Blackwood of the Empire places a young British officer in the Anglo-Zulu War and the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Crawford’s Crusade concerns Royal Marines combating the nineteenth-century Atlantic slave trade, and his other military fiction includes First World War stories and the Black Ops Vietnam: ANZACS series. He is also known for the extensive Star Crusades universe and other military science-fiction sequences, which adapt historical tactics and campaign structures to futuristic warfare.
