Siege of Sherpur Cantonment

December 1879 CE

After uprisings around Kabul, Frederick Roberts concentrated his force within the large Sherpur Cantonment. Afghan fighters occupied surrounding heights, disrupted communications and subjected the garrison to repeated skirmishing and attacks.

On 23 December a major assault struck the perimeter, but disciplined infantry and artillery defence held until cavalry and relief forces helped disperse the attackers. Winter weather and the scale of the cantonment made preparation and coordination central to survival.

Historical fiction can use Sherpur for siege conditions, night patrols, mixed imperial units and the tension of defending a wide perimeter in severe cold.
