Battle of Charasiab
6 October 1879 CE
Afghan troops occupied ridges and fortified positions south of Kabul near Charasiab. On 6 October 1879 Frederick Roberts used infantry, artillery and turning movements to dislodge them and secure the advance on the capital.
The battle demonstrated the importance of high ground and coordination in Afghan mountain warfare. British and Indian units fought across broken terrain against defenders equipped with artillery, rifles and traditional jezails.
Fiction set at Charasiab can focus on the Kabul Field Force, Gurkha and Sikh units, mountain artillery and the pressure of advancing rapidly after the murder of the British mission.
