Battle of Huế

31 January–2 March 1968 CE

North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops captured most of Huế at the opening of the Tet Offensive, while South Vietnamese defenders held parts of the Citadel and military compounds. ARVN, United States Marine and allied forces then fought to recover the city over several weeks.

The battle was marked by street fighting, fortified buildings, artillery and air support, severe civilian losses and extensive destruction. The struggle north and south of the Perfume River made Huế one of the longest and most costly urban engagements of the Vietnam War.
