Martial wrote sharp, compact epigrams that praise, mock and negotiate with the social world of Rome. His poems mention patrons, booksellers, dinner invitations, clients, sexual gossip, poverty, ambition and the conditions of literary survival.

He belongs in Classical for pages on Roman urban culture, satire, patronage and everyday social performance. His work is particularly useful for giving imperial Rome texture outside formal history.
