Reign of Henry VII
1485–1509 CE
Henry VII ruled England from 1485 to 1509 after winning the crown at Bosworth. His reign was less spectacular than those of his son and granddaughter, but it was crucial in stabilising the monarchy. He faced pretenders, noble suspicion and the problem of making a new dynasty appear inevitable.
Henry’s government strengthened royal finance, controlled magnate power and used marriage alliances to connect England with Europe. The reign also left a legacy of caution and suspicion that shaped the Tudor court. By the time Henry VIII inherited the throne, the dynasty was secure but not emotionally settled.
Philippa Gregory’s Tudor novels, Alison Weir’s fiction and several Wars of the Roses series use Henry VII’s reign as a bridge between medieval dynastic conflict and early modern monarchy. The period supports stories about court calculation, hidden heirs, marriage diplomacy and families adjusting to a new political order.
