Muhammad XII of Granada

1459–1533

Muhammad XII of Granada was the last Nasrid ruler of Granada, known in Spanish tradition as Boabdil. His reign was divided by civil war within the Nasrid dynasty and pressure from Ferdinand and Isabella, ending with the surrender of Granada in 1492.

In Tariq Ali’s Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree, set in al-Andalus after the surrender of Granada in 1492, the novel follows the fictional al-Hudayl family as Castilian rule closes around the remaining Muslim population. In Robyn Young’s Court of Wolves, Harry Vaughan serves Henry on a covert mission to the Spanish court, where Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon are completing the war against Granada while Christopher Columbus seeks support for a western voyage.
