Norman Kingdom of Sicily

1130–1194 CE

The Norman Kingdom of Sicily was established in 1130 when Roger II united Sicily and his mainland possessions under a royal crown. Palermo became the centre of a court drawing on Norman, Arabic, Greek and Latin institutions.

The kingdom’s Norman period combined conquest, administration and cultural exchange in a strategically important Mediterranean state. It ended in 1194 when the crown passed to the Hohenstaufen dynasty.
