Norman Sicily

Norman Sicily emerged from the eleventh-century conquest of territories previously ruled by Muslim and Byzantine powers. Under rulers including Roger II, the kingdom combined Norman political authority with Arabic, Greek and Latin administrative and intellectual traditions.

The kingdom matters for its unusual concentration of Mediterranean cultures, languages and religions, although coexistence operated within changing structures of conquest and royal power.
