War
1856–1873
The Panthay Rebellion was a prolonged uprising in Yunnan involving Hui Muslim communities and Qing forces. Under Du Wenxiu, the rebels established a state centred on Dali that survived for more than a decade.
The conflict grew from ethnic violence, local grievances and struggles over Qing authority. Its defeat in 1873 brought mass death, displacement and the destruction of the rebel regime.
This context supports fiction about Chinese Muslim history, rebellion, migration, inherited trauma and the links between Yunnan and later diasporic communities.
