The Late Ottoman Empire was a period of political reform, centralisation, foreign pressure and nationalist conflict extending from the reign of Abdul Hamid II through the Young Turk era and the empire’s dissolution after the First World War.
The period matters because Ottoman rulers and reformers attempted to preserve a diverse imperial state while facing separatist movements, constitutional demands, military defeats and intervention by European powers.
