An Evil Eye
First published 2011
Istanbul, 1839. Mahmud II is dead, a young sultan is installing a new household and the Ottoman fleet has been taken to Egypt by its commander, Fevzi Ahmet Pasha. The admiral once trained Yashim and remains the one man he truly fears. Yashim is ordered to determine why a servant of the dynasty would hand the empire’s ships to Muhammad Ali of Egypt at a moment of military and political weakness.
The inquiry draws Yashim into the closed world of the imperial harem, where women connected to the sultan’s orchestra are falling ill and dying. Their deaths reveal that Fevzi’s defection is bound to secrets preserved inside the former sultan’s household. To prevent a private history from becoming an imperial catastrophe, Yashim must confront his old mentor’s methods and decide which loyalties survived the change of reign.
