Kingdom of Jerusalem before Hattin
1174–1187
In the years before Hattin, the Kingdom of Jerusalem faced succession problems, internal factions and the strategic challenge posed by Saladin. Baldwin IV’s illness, disputes around Sibylla and Guy of Lusignan, and rivalry among nobles weakened political unity.
The kingdom was not simply a battlefield society. It contained Latin settlers, eastern Christians, Muslims, Jews, military orders, merchants and local lordships, all operating within a frontier culture shaped by diplomacy and war.
The Land Beyond the Sea is set in this fragile world before the disaster of 1187.
