By 1304, Edward I appears to have subdued Scotland, but Robert Bruce’s conflict with John Comyn makes compromise increasingly impossible. After killing Comyn and claiming the crown in 1306, Robert is defeated, driven into the western islands and separated from family members captured by the English. With a small band of supporters, he rebuilds resistance through raids, local alliances and a more flexible form of warfare.
Edward I’s death transfers the English campaign to Edward II, while Robert turns survival into a renewed struggle for control of Scotland. The sequence culminates in the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314, where the future of Bruce’s monarchy and the independence movement are decided on the field. The novel was published in North America as Judgment.
