In 1295, with the mainland Crusader states destroyed, Will Campbell returns to Europe and finds that the Knights Templar have exchanged one war for another. The order supports Edward I’s attempt to dominate Scotland, forcing Will to choose between vows made in the Temple and loyalty to his homeland. William Wallace’s rebellion and the brutal English response draw him into a conflict in which neutrality is no longer possible.
The struggle extends to France, where Will’s daughter Rose becomes entangled in the court of Philip IV. The French king’s need for money and determination to control independent institutions place the Templars in mortal danger, while Will tries to protect both his family and the remaining Brethren. The novel was published in North America as The Fall of the Templars.
