First published 2012
After the collapse of organised Scottish resistance in the late 1290s, Robert Bruce outwardly submits to Edward I while continuing to measure his own path to the throne. Rival claimants and the powerful Comyn interest make open defiance almost suicidal. A mission to Ireland in search of the Staff of Saint Malachy, one of the relics coveted by Edward, gives Robert a chance to obstruct the English king while concealing his larger ambitions.
Hunted by an assassin and distrusted by Scots who regard accommodation with England as treachery, Robert learns that political survival may require the abandonment of friends, promises and reputation. The novel places his private calculations within the continuing Wars of Scottish Independence and the shadow of William Wallace. It was published in North America as Rebellion.
