French officers arrested members of the Knights Templar on 13 October 1307. Confessions were extracted under pressure, while Philip IV sought control of the order's property and pushed the papacy towards dissolution.
Pope Clement V formally suppressed the order in 1312. Jacques de Molay and Geoffroi de Charney were burned in Paris in 1314 after retracting earlier confessions.
The Iron King opens with the destruction of the order and turns the later legend of de Molay's curse into the organising motif of the series.
