Homeric Epic Tradition
8th–6th centuries BCE
The Homeric poems draw on older oral traditions about the Trojan War, heroic society, divine intervention and aristocratic memory. The Iliad centres on anger, honour and death at Troy, while the Odyssey follows return, disguise, testing and household restoration.
The tradition matters because it became the foundation of Greek education and later classical literature. Historians, philosophers, tragedians and Roman poets repeatedly argued with or reworked Homeric material.
Homer translations, Greek epic, Trojan retellings and Roman works such as the Aeneid all draw on this literary background.
