Before Clytemnestra becomes queen of Mycenae, Agamemnon seizes her home, kills her first husband Tantalus and their infant son, and forces her into marriage. She enters the House of Atreus as both captive and political prize, surrounded by a dynasty whose history of violence is treated as inheritance. Survival requires her to understand Agamemnon’s ambition while building a life around the children born from the marriage: Iphigenia, Electra and Orestes.
Clytemnestra attempts to protect her household from the rivalries linking Mycenae, Sparta and Troy, but the marriages and desires of the younger generation give Agamemnon the opportunity for war he has been seeking. His demand that family submit to kingship brings Clytemnestra’s endurance to its limit and establishes the grievances that will define the House of Atreus after the Trojan expedition. The novel gives the condemned queen her own first-person account, grounding mythic events in motherhood, coercive marriage, palace politics and the material world of Bronze Age Greece.
