Helen is taken from the family life she values in Sparta and married to Menelaus as part of a political settlement that measures her by beauty, fertility and dynastic usefulness. When Paris arrives from Troy, she sees in him an escape from an unhappy marriage and leaves behind both Menelaus and her daughter Hermione. The new life she imagines rapidly becomes another confinement as Trojans and Achaeans make her the explanation for a war created by royal ambition.
Helen’s account alternates with that of Achilles, whose pursuit of glory binds him to the Greek expedition and to Patroclus even when conflict with Agamemnon removes him from battle. Through their perspectives, the long siege is seen from inside Troy and the Achaean camp: Helen negotiates hostility, guilt and survival, while Achilles confronts the prophecy attached to his fame and the consequences of military honour. The novel strips away the heroic distance of epic tradition to examine marriage, same-sex love, blame and the destruction endured by families on both sides.
