Caroline Alexander is a British-American author, classicist, journalist and filmmaker known for bringing historical events to life through detailed research and narrative non-fiction. Born in Florida to British parents, she studied philosophy and theology at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar before earning a doctorate in classics from Columbia University. She later established the Department of Classics at the University of Malawi and has written extensively for publications including The New Yorker, National Geographic, Smithsonian and Outside. Her background in classics, exploration and journalism has shaped a career focused on ancient warfare, maritime history, exploration and extraordinary episodes of human endurance.
Alexander's books are primarily works of narrative history and literary non-fiction. The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition recounts Ernest Shackleton's disastrous 1914–17 Antarctic expedition and the struggle of his crew to survive, while The Bounty: The True Story of the Mutiny on the Bounty reconstructs the famous 1789 mutiny and its aftermath. Her classical scholarship is reflected in The War That Killed Achilles, an examination of warfare and suffering in Homer's Iliad, and in her 2015 English translation of the Iliad. She has also written Lost Gold of the Dark Ages, concerning the Anglo-Saxon Staffordshire Hoard, and Skies of Thunder, about the dangerous Allied air-supply route across the Himalayas during the Second World War. Across these works Alexander combines close historical research with character-driven storytelling, concentrating particularly on war, exploration, survival and the experience of people caught in extreme circumstances.
