Electra

Electra was a daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra in Greek myth and tragedy. She supports or urges the revenge taken by her brother Orestes for their father’s murder, linking the aftermath of the Trojan War to the continuing curse of the House of Atreus.

In different tragic traditions she encourages or assists her brother Orestes in killing Clytemnestra and Aegisthus, making her central to the moral cycle of violence in the House of Atreus.

In Susan C Wilson’s Clytemnestra’s Bind, before Clytemnestra becomes queen of Mycenae, Agamemnon seizes her home, kills her first husband Tantalus and their infant son, and forces her into marriage. She enters the House of Atreus as both captive and political prize, surrounded by a dynasty whose history of violence is treated as inheritance. Survival requires her to understand Agamemnon’s ambition while building a life around the children born from the marriage: Iphigenia, Electra and Orestes. Clytemnestra attempts to protect her household from the rivalries linking Mycenae, Sparta and Troy, but the marriages and desires of the younger generation give Agamemnon the opportunity for war he has been seeking. Henry Treece’s Electra survives inside the victorious household, preserving the memory of her father while waiting for her exiled brother Orestes. Electra is treated fictionally in EuripidesElectra and Other Plays, Euripides’ Orestes and Other Plays, Euripides’ The Bacchae and Other Plays, and Costanza Casati’s Clytemnestra.
