The retelling draws together familiar episodes from the Robin Hood tradition and places them against the contested authority associated with Richard I’s absence and King John’s rule. Sutcliff treats the legend as a story about fellowship and justice rather than merely a sequence of adventures. Robin’s resistance depends on local knowledge and popular support, but it also carries the cost of living permanently outside ordinary protection.
