The Axe

Olav Audunsson and Ingunn Steinfinnsdatter are promised to one another as children at Frettastein, but after her father’s death the validity of the betrothal is challenged by relatives who want control of her marriage. Their attempt to live as husband and wife before the dispute is settled deepens the hostility around them. Olav kills Einar Kolbeinsson during a feud and is outlawed, forcing him into exile and service under the powerful noble Alv Erlingsson. Bishop Thorfinn of Hamar becomes one of the few authorities willing to treat the young couple with justice and compassion.

Years of separation leave Ingunn vulnerable, and she becomes pregnant by the Icelandic clerk Teit Hallsson. Olav secretly kills Teit and later accepts the child Eirik as his own, preserving Ingunn’s reputation but creating a crime he believes he can never confess without exposing her. His loyalty to Alv draws him into further outlawry under Eric II before he is finally released from service and able to reclaim Hestviken. The novel ends with the marriage achieved at the cost of blood, concealment and a spiritual burden that will shape every later volume.
