In Shadows of Kings

by K. M. Ashman Book 2 in the Medieval Sagas series.

First published 2014

4.3(1,472)

In 1274 Garyn and Geraint return to south Wales after the dangers of Acre and attempt to rebuild their lives. An enemy from their past separates the brothers and draws them into conflicts that extend beyond their own family.

Henry III is dead and Edward I returns from crusade to claim the English crown. Welsh nobles, frustrated by division and weak leadership, consider a new figure around whom resistance might unite.

Edward’s accession changes the balance of power along the Welsh border. The brothers’ private enemy can exploit the uncertainty because Welsh princes and English lords are reassessing which alliances will protect their own lands. Separation therefore exposes Garyn and Geraint to different political pressures while the possibility of renewed Welsh resistance turns family danger into part of a larger regional struggle.
