The Warrior Queens is a comparative history of women who exercised military or political authority in moments of conflict. Beginning with Boudica and moving through figures such as Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Elizabeth I and later female leaders, Fraser examines how women in power were praised, feared, sexualised or mythologised when they were associated with war. The book is less a single chronological narrative than a study of reputation, leadership and the recurring image of the woman ruler as both national symbol and military threat.
