An Uncommon Woman

by Antonia Fraser Book 1 in the Women in History series.

4.0(41)

This biography traces the life of Victoria, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, from her British childhood to marriage with the future German emperor Frederick III. Intelligent, politically engaged and strongly influenced by her parents’ liberal ideals, she entered a Prussian court in which many of those convictions met determined resistance.

Her marriage placed her at the centre of the wars and political changes that created the German Empire, but Frederick’s brief reign left little opportunity for the reforms they had hoped to pursue. The later conflict with their son Wilhelm II gives the biography a family dimension as well as a political one, showing how dynastic relationships intersected with the formation of modern Germany.
