The King and the Catholics examines the struggle that led to Catholic Emancipation in 1829. Fraser follows the pressure built by Irish Catholic mobilisation, Daniel O’Connell’s campaigns, parliamentary resistance, royal hostility and the political calculations of Wellington and Peel. The book presents emancipation as a constitutional and religious crisis in late Georgian Britain and Ireland, where civil rights, Protestant identity and fear of disorder collided.
