County Bailiff Edward Mountsorrel is deceived into allowing deer to be stolen from a local estate, while Town Bailiff Francis Barton investigates the disappearance of Nell, a young woman last seen leaving an alehouse with a wealthy stranger. What begin as separate cases soon threaten the authority and reputation of both men.
Their shared house is burned and their servant murdered, suggesting that someone is determined to stop the enquiries. As more women disappear, Edward and Francis follow the connections between poaching, privileged offenders and abduction, racing to locate the captives before the criminals can remove the remaining evidence.
