Edward discovers that a local healer accused of sorcery is a knowledgeable woman rather than a servant of the Devil and hides her from those demanding punishment. The arrival of a professional Scottish witch-hunter intensifies the panic, forcing the bailiff to uncover the human agency behind the supposed hauntings while protecting people endangered by fear and prejudice.
