Richard and Jack Fitzwarren return to England after years shaped by exile, mercenary work and the Knights of St John. Elizabeth’s accession appears to offer Richard the recognition and protection that his loyalty has long been denied. Yet royal favour cannot automatically restore property, settle old accusations or remove the men who benefited from the brothers’ absence.
Jack is given an opportunity to confront his father on more equal terms and determine whether acceptance within the Fitzwarren family is possible. Richard must also discover whether Elizabeth’s government sees him as a trusted servant or merely a useful survivor of earlier crises. The novel acts as a transition from the Marian sequence to the political bargains and religious pressures of the new Elizabethan regime.
