In 1559, Protestant Scottish nobles seek English help against the French forces supporting Mary of Guise. William Cecil gives Richard Fitzwarren a mission that the government must be able to deny: escort the reformer John Knox safely towards Scotland, where his preaching can strengthen the Lords of the Congregation. Elizabeth dislikes Knox’s attacks on female rule, making association with him politically hazardous even when his cause serves English interests.
Jack Fitzwarren, after offending Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, is sent north into the military intervention that culminates around besieged Leith. The separated brothers encounter different sides of the same undeclared policy—covert support, open war and plausible deniability. Their missions place fictional service inside the Scottish Reformation and the negotiations that removed French troops from Scotland in 1560.
