In 1587, England and Spain move towards open war after years of religious conflict, privateering and attacks on Spanish treasure fleets. Thomas Varian is a rising captain in Francis Drake’s navy, trusted for his courage but concealing a Catholic faith that could destroy his career and place his life in danger. His service to Elizabeth I demands loyalty to a Protestant state whose policies have made his private beliefs a liability.

As Philip II prepares the Spanish Armada, Thomas learns that the coming invasion will also bring him against his long-estranged father, who serves the Spanish cause. The conflict tests loyalty to family, religion, sovereign and country while English ships attempt to prevent a more powerful fleet from securing command of the Channel. The novel combines the naval campaign of 1588 with the personal consequences of the Elizabethan religious divide.
