Atticus remains trapped in Carthaginian territory while Rome’s senators delay deciding whether to support their recent enemy. Around Utica, the unpaid mercenary army is moving from protest to organised war, and a mutilated envoy demonstrates that negotiation is collapsing into retaliatory violence. With Septimus beside him and only limited forces available, Atticus must protect Roman interests without allowing the wider rebellion to destroy Carthage.

Operations on shore and at sea place the Roman crews inside a conflict whose factions show little restraint. Atticus’s adopted republic may abandon him, while cooperation with Hamilcar Barca requires trust between commanders who fought on opposite sides only months earlier. The second novel develops the Mercenary War as a struggle in which rescue, revenge and duty become increasingly indistinguishable.
