Mercenary War
241–237 BCE
The Mercenary War, also called the Truceless War, began after Carthage’s defeat in the First Punic War. Soldiers who had served Carthage in Sicily expected payment, but disputes over pay, demobilisation and command turned into mutiny and then wider revolt in North Africa.
The war mattered because it nearly destroyed Carthage from within. Rebel leaders including Mathos and Spendius drew support from discontented troops and African communities, while Carthaginian commanders such as Hamilcar Barca fought to recover control through siege, negotiation, ambush and extreme punishment.
Salammbo uses the Mercenary War as its historical frame, turning the conflict into a story of siege, sacred objects, erotic fixation, political panic and ritual violence.
