Elizabethan London. Apprentice actors Ben Button and Matthew Fields are preparing with Lord Bonner's Players for a performance before Queen Elizabeth at the Rose Theatre in Southwark. Rival players, hostile moralists and the everyday hazards of the theatre create plenty of tension even before an expensive costume is stolen and a suspicious fire breaks out.
When the company's leading actor is badly injured, Ben and Matthew must put aside their own rivalry and determine who is sabotaging the production. Their search takes them through the theatrical districts and criminal refuges of London, where professional jealousy is only one possible motive. The second Elizabethan Mysteries adventure uses a plot of disappearance and sabotage to show the organisation, danger and social controversy of the late-sixteenth-century stage.
