The Ramage Hawk

by John Pilkington Book 3 in the The Thomas the Falconer Mysteries series.

First published 2004

4.4(3,693)

Thomas Finbow is sent to Salisbury Plain to help the impoverished Sir Giles Buckeridge, training a half-wild ramage hawk and teaching falconry to his young ward Gervase. Sir Giles is also struggling to arrange respectable marriages for three daughters whose dowries he can barely afford.

When his eldest daughter Jane disappears, it is assumed that she has fled an unwanted match with an older wealthy suitor. The search soon reveals that the problem is more dangerous than a runaway bride, and further deaths turn Thomas's temporary posting into a murder investigation. Against the open landscape of the Plain, falconry, inheritance and marriage negotiations become part of a mystery about the pressures that property and family expectation place on an Elizabethan household.
