The Bishopsgate Ward Mysteries

The Bishopsgate Ward Mysteries follow Matthew Cutler, a former actor serving as parish constable in Spitalfields during the 1590s. His official powers are modest, so he relies on disguise, local knowledge and a strong sense of justice while investigating crimes that cross the social boundaries of the rapidly growing city.

The sequence moves year by year from 1594 to 1596. Murder, counterfeiting and militia duty bring Cutler into contact with anti-foreigner feeling, price unrest, criminal networks and the renewed fear of Spanish invasion. The books use one ward and its inhabitants to show how national religious and military tensions were experienced through everyday urban policing.
